纽约时报4月28日以“从曼哈顿的睡房内试图在中国煽起抗议风潮”为题，采访了自2月底在网上呼吁中国民众每周日上街散步的中国茉莉花行动组织者，一位27岁的年轻人。
他来自武汉，毕业于纽约哥伦比亚大学，现住在曼哈顿上城他女朋友的公寓里。他要求记者叫他“盖约•格拉古”，古罗马一位不幸的改革家。他在网络上的笔名叫“华哥”。

文章说，华哥的团体大约有25人，平均年龄只有22岁，分布在中国国内以及巴黎、首尔、台湾、香港、澳大利亚等地，都是精通互联网的活跃人士。文章说，跟他在国内的一位伙伴一起，“华哥”是在互联网上最先公布中国茉莉花集会时间地点的一位，并仍是茉莉花行动的最强音。
文章说，虽然茉莉花集会并未成功获得呼应，但却是中国当局十分紧张，每个周日，只有警察笼罩北京、上海等地试图扑灭可能出现的集会。
文章说，最早的茉莉花集会呼吁是在推特上发出的，但帐号很快被关闭；然后海外中文网站“博讯”刊登了这个通知，但很快博讯被攻击瘫痪；之后“华哥”联络了国内的活跃人士，通过谷歌博客平台推出了“茉莉花行网站”molihuaxingdong.blogspot.com，保持了网上的势头。美联社率先报道了他的角色。
华哥说，“茉莉花革命就像一面旗帜，它就在那儿，谁想扛都可以。”该网站现在记录的访问流量已超过110万，登记的电子邮箱数超过3千。时报刊登了一张华哥在昏暗的睡房里工作在两个电脑屏幕前的照片，但看不清他的相貌。
华哥告诉时报记者，他经常向海外民运领袖之一的王军涛请教，“当我有问题时，我会打电话给他，因为我还年轻。”时报记者还在位于纽约法拉盛的民主党全国委员会总部办公室采访了王军涛，王军涛说，“我们对茉莉花运动感到兴奋，因为我们看到中国年轻的人，他们希望回到街头。”
Mr. David Goodman at the New York Times produced a report on April 28th that contains intentional misstatement of facts.
Since the start of the movement, we receive 50 to 100 responses and attract 20,000 page views on a daily basis, most of which are from China, despite the Great Fire Wall. With our continuing organizational efforts for the Jasmine Revolution, the people's subconscious acceptance of having a “revolution” now widely spreads, which brews non-violent struggles nation-wide, with or without the stamp of "Jasmine Revolution". As a matter of fact, local protests now receive significant better results (from the Nanjing French Tree Movement to Shanghai workers' strike), since the authorities fear that such peaceful protests may become national. We have closely reported local protests, calling for attention and support, and received requests to connect with these events. One noticeable example of which is the Nanjing French Tree Movement; we issued announcement in support of such endeavor, communicated with local protesters, and received and published pictures and reports from the participants. Mr. David Goodman says that "the organizers neither sought to connect their efforts to a Jasmine movement nor displayed any indication that they were even aware of it," which is merely an intentional misstatement of what Gaius clearly explained during the interview.
Mr. David Goodman erroneously reported that non-appearance of large scale assembly means non-existence of such social movement. In fact, the authorities' response to such callings indicates that if armed police had been non-existent, people's assembly would have sprung up in each strolling site. In the world's largest police state in which even foreign journalists had been severely beaten, we have specifically called for low intensity confrontation, "smiling and strolling" in disguise as random visitors. Gaius showed Mr. David Goodman emails from participants indicating that this strategy has been adopted and effective.
Mr. David Goodman's “careful” selection of quotes to portray an image of failure and irresponsibility, coupled by his intentional misstatement of facts, well indicates his lack of journalistic professionalism, for which we feel deeply sad. This response will be fully developed to send to Mr. Joe Khan, deputy foreign editor of The New York Times.
